Bridging
past and present and this client’s strong Chinese
heritage provided much inspiration for this garden.
Classic Center Hall Colonial architecture needed to
become one with Eastern garden design philosophies.
Equally important was the desire to create a GREEN
ENVIRONMENT: free of lawns and drought tolerant plantings.
Perched on top of a hill overlooking the Hudson, positive
energy flowed from the beginning to the end of
the “river beds”. Meandering down the bank,
one encounters a natural garden path, stone bridges
and a stone seat.
According to I.M. Pei, to make a Chinese garden you
need water, rocks and nature. To balance Eastern Design
with Western Architecture, heavy perennial plantings
(sprinkled with red for good luck) ground the garden.
Retaining boulder walls terrace the property while bluestone steps and pathways
carry you to the entrance.
